MNUSA Snowmobilers from around the country, including four from Minnesota, spent three days in Washington D.C. They were not touring the White House or visiting the Smithsonian — they were there to press the flesh with elected representatives and learn about important issues that affect our sport. It’s important that MnUSA makes this annual trip, said MnUSA President Terry Hutchinson. “Many federal laws and policies affect our trails in our National Forests, as well as Recreational Trail Program funding for our trails and grooming equipment purchases,” he said. In addition to Hutchinson, vice president Mark Kavanaugh and his wife, Sue; Debbie Hutchinson; business coordinator Nancy Hanson; and membership committee chair Jerry Hanson also made the trip. They had an aggressive schedule that included visits with 10 representatives over the course of one day. The schedule had meetings with Reps. Tim Walz, Tom Emmer, Collin Peterson, Keith Ellison, Rick Nolan, Erik Paulsen, John Kline and Betty McCollum and Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken. For Hutchinson, the best part of the Fly-In was meeting with Danny Carlson, center, the transportation expert in Sen. Klobuchar’s office, addressed the group on RTP funding. MnUSA leadership Mark Kavanaugh (left), Terry Hutchinson, Jerry Hanson and Nancy Hanson got special recognition from Carlson. WASHINGTON Sen. Klobuchar because of her willingness to protect snowmobiling in Minnesota. “She has been, and continues to be the leader in the Senate to provide Recreational Trail Program funding to our state,” Hutchinson said. When meeting with representatives, they talked about things that matter to Minnesota snowmobilers, such as the Recreational Trail Program (RTP) that helps fund some trail infrastructure and current legislation that could impact snowmobiling, such as the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act. Before meeting the elected officials, though, the MnUSA representatives had two intense days learning about various federal-level issues surrounding the sport. Sen. Klobuchar’s transportation staff aide, Danny Carlson, talked to the entire group about RTP and its future funding. There was also discussion on the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act cosponsored by Rep. Tim Walz where the U.S. Forest Service would be required to partner with volunteers and other groups for maintenance of trails. Other Minnesota representatives have signed on to the bill, including Rep. Peterson, Rep. Nolan and Rep. Kline. Jerry Hanson (left) and Mark Kavanaugh (right) met with Sen. Franken’s staff member Matt Hayward. Sen. Klobuchar, center, met the group in person. In Rep. Peterson’s office: Mark and Sue Kavanaugh, Debbie Hutchinson, Peterson aide Richard Lee, Nancy and Jerry Hanson and Terry Hutchinson.
