Forest Service Maps The U.S. Forest Service is in the process of creating new maps for national forests, which include Minnesota’s national forests: Chippewa and Superior. These maps, called Over Snow Vehicle Use Maps (OSVUM) will be used for enforcement purposes: snowmobilers can only ride on trails or routes designated on the maps. Through the Coalition of Recreational Trail Users, MnUSA has an agreement with the US Forest Service, the Minnesota DNR and local counties to create navigational maps for winter and summer travel. MnUSA will also work with clubs to ensure that areas currently open to snowmobiling will appear on the maps. Safety School Last year, snowmobile safety instructors held 182 classes across the state certifying youth and adults in the proper way to ride snowmobiles. The DNR is tweaking the courses for this fall, segueing away from the instructional CDs and into an online safety class. The ATV and off-road motorcycle online training will roll out this summer; the snowmobile online course will be ready this fall. Clubs will continue to be involved in training and the on-sled testing requirement for youth under 16.
