Off-Road News Member Rewards By Dave Clevenger As part of celebrating our 10-year anniversary, the South Metro ATV Club decided to do something special for its annual membership drive. As a club, we believe that we are part of an ATV community and that, to really affect the sport we love, we need to partner with all involved parties. We came up with a simple idea: to encourage ATV owners to join a club and become active in supporting the sport by offering a free club membership to those who purchase a new ATV/OHV from a participating sponsor. By targeting new ATV owners, we have an opportunity to educate them about our organizations and the associated benefits. In turn, it will increase our membership and create an opportunity to prove our value and earn their renewal. By partnering with our sponsors, we provide an additional value to them and strengthen the overall ATV community. We presented our plan to our sponsors and ATVAM and asked them to participate with us. Our club agreed to cover the cost of creating the promotional materials (postcards, website) and train our sponsors. ATVAM agreed to match our offer and provide full membership status and associated benefits. Our sponsors agreed to hand deliver a postcard with the purchase of a new ATV/OHV and encourage them to join the South Metro ATV Club and ATVAM.The postcard details how they can claim their free membership. Our sponsors are Leo’s South and MotoPrimo MotorSports in Lakeville; Lighthouse Motorsports and Marine in Rosemount; and Tousley Motorsports in White Bear Lake. While we are only a few weeks into the program, we have already received our first new member from the program and are very hopeful for many more. RIDE Act for Offroad Vehicles On April 22, U.S. Senators Dean Heller (R-NV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced The ROV In-Depth Examination (RIDE) Act in the Senate, bill S. 1040. Earlier this year, U.S. Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and Collin Peterson (D-MN) introduced The RIDE Act in the House of Representatives bill H.R. 999. Both bills will be considered by their respective Committees in the coming weeks prior to possible votes on the House and Senate floors later this year. Thanks to the off-road community’s support H.R. 999 currently has 51 bi-partisan co-sponsors. “Having The RIDE Act introduced in the Senate demonstrates that the off-road community’s voice is being heard, but it is important that we continue to speak out,” said Paul Vitrano,VP global government relations for Polaris. , “Polaris urges everyone to either contact their representatives and senators directly.” Polaris created a website,, to explain the issue and assist in contacting elected officials. Congress received more than 90,000 messages from off-road enthusiasts concerning the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) October, 2014, proposed mandates for off-road, side-by-side vehicles (ROVs).The CPSC’s proposed rulemaking would mandate handling and performance capabilities of all future ROVs, and require excessive and potentially unsafe restraint systems. The RIDE Act would address concerns that the CPSC’s proposals would unnecessarily limit design freedom in the off-road industry and negatively impact off-road customers by requiring an independent study of the proposals prior to enactment.
