Support Legislation to Quantify the Economic Impact of Recreation – Send an Email in Support of S. 2219 and H.R. 4665.
Companion bills, S. 2219 and H.R. 4665, known as the Outdoor REC (Recreation’s Economic Contributions) Act have been introduced in the U.S. Congress and are starting to move. The bills would require the Secretary of Commerce in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Labor and in consultation with federal land management agencies to assess and analyze the outdoor recreation economy of the United States and the effects attributable to it on the overall U.S. economy. The assessment may consider employment, sales, contributions to travel and tourism, and other appropriate contributing components of the outdoor recreation economy.
A private 2012 study found that outdoor recreation generates $646 billion in consumer spending each year and supports 6.1 million jobs. This study was conducted by the Outdoor Industry Association in cooperation with several partners. The motorized recreation industry funded the motorized portion of the study which found that approximately $257 billion or nearly 40% of the total $646 billion in economic impact is derived from motorized recreation. We believe this is important information for policy makers and agency personnel as they make important land use decisions about how to best provide for responsible multiple uses that meet the needs of their local communities.
Further, while we believe the unmistakable intent of the legislation is for motorized recreation to be included in the assessment, it is important that key decision makers hear from OHV enthusiasts the importance of the impact of motorized recreation.
Take action and send a letter to your Members of Congress in support of the legislation and highlight the importance of motorized recreation.
